Day 70: Falling into a vortex in Sedona, AZ

WE MADE IT.  We may have arrived after 1 a.m., following an hour in the snow, but we got there.  A few quick sips of whiskey with Pete, then a nap of a few hours, and we're off on our first hike in three weeks (maybe more??)

Heading out to Devil's Bridge -- not that any of us actually knew what was at the end of the trail (maybe Pete did?)

Supposedly Sedona is at the center of an energy vortex, or an energy vortex is in Sedona, or...I don't know.  Something like that.  Here's a better explanation.

Sedona is known for red rock, by the way.  It's everywhere.

"Winter! Catch this log!"

Almost.

"NO! NOT IN THE RED WATER!"

"NO! WINTER! DON'T DRINK THE RED WATER!"

She's oh so well-trained.

Sorry, forgot to mention that it was a nearly two-mile walk from the parking lot because of one of the millions of closed roads we've run into.

Manzanita

Taking a quick break

Winter is a MUCH better hiker than humans.

NO WINTER DON'T CHASE THAT STICK OVER THE LEDGE!

Gorilla face rock (at least, I think so).  Well, actually it doesn't look like a gorilla.  Not really sure.  But it looks like SOMETHING.

Made it.

It still took me another few minutes to realize what I was looking at

Laura saw it

Oh NOW I see it.

"Ok I just have to take a second"

"Just walk across slowly like this"

"Nope nope just need a second." "But you're already...in the middle of it...?"

Much more confident this time.  Almost TOO confident.  These things DO eventually collapse you know...

My turn.

"Think it's safe to sit here?"

"What about that ledge down there, is that a bad idea?" "YES!"

Snacks.

"Uh...I think this might be too steep, even for her..."  "Let's see.  Come on up!"  Winter: "I got this."

Winter: "Nopenopenope notgonnahappen."

And now, from underneath

NO WINTER! GETAWAYFROMTHELEDGE!

This was a small tree.

A really small tree.

Around town -- literally, these surround the town

Heading up to Flagstaff through Oak Creek Canyon

Brother and sister in tow

Shout out to soon-to-be Dr. Yaron, who taught us the techniques and nuances of disc golf (it's NOT frisbee golf) in Philly a few days before we left in October.  We've seen about 15 disc golf courses, and they're always in the most random little towns.

For instance, there are drivers, and fairway drivers...

...and mid-range discs, and putters...  It's really quite complicated

I should mention -- at this point we decided that we wanted to backpack down into the Grand Canyon, but found out that the first and last two of sixteen total miles are covered in ice and packed snow.  Time to get real crampons?  Maybe.

Awesome.

We spent an hour wandering around looking for a happy hour, and finally found this.

SOUTHWESTERN FISH TACOS!  Honestly, these were kind of better than some (or all) of the fish tacos on the west coast... Don't tell California.

Annnnd then we got drunk.

What?

Yeah, drunk.  Drunk enough to have tacos again a half hour later.  Solid prep for two grueling days of non-stop hiking, right?

Tomorrow, the Grand Canyon!
