Day 25 sidetrip: Winner, South Dakota (Burr homestead)

On the way through South Dakota, we made a side trip to Laura's great (great?) grandfather's homestead near Winner, SD.  Bought from the original homesteader in 1912, no one there since sometime mid-twentieth century.

It was kind of in the middle of nowhere... (the red star below)

"Uhhh I think... it might be out there... uhh maybe?"

"Or maybe out there?"

These signs weren't exactly helpful, especially when you're trying to find 286th Street and 306th Ave.

Wait... this looks right (note the dirt road on the right side)

Time to walk a mile or so in 40 mph gusts of wind and hope we find it...

First view of where we think we're supposed to be -- the copse of trees in the distance

Winter's favorite hour of the whole trip

Found it.

"Oh, there's the outhouse.  Let's check it out."

"Oh, it's a basement, want to go down and see what's there?"

"Nope nope nope nope nope definitely don't want to die down here."

"Hmm what's in there?"

"Are those...?"

"Yup, lots and lots of bones."

Couldn't really tell if this meant that the wires into the building were still live...

Winter found a car.

South Dakota is dotted with little scattered pools like this

Annnnd back on the road

And the landscape is starting to change...

Starting to look like the Badlands, but not until the next entry.

Psych out!  Random checkpoint in the absolute middle of nowhere!  "Sir, your front right highbeam is out.  Please get it fixed."
